Apple iPhone. Where is the GPS? And the apps? And the name?

Apple logoSo, Apple announced the iPhone. After the stock leap at Nasdaq, people seem to be having a closer look at what was really announced. Some analyst is writing down a few numbers. Somewhere else we read that, in order to achieve better stability, the iPhone will be a closed system. No third-party apps. I’m desperately seeking for built-in GPS. My little Mio A701 is a phone, an MP3 player, a video player, a camera and a GPS. I can put almost any kind of app on it and, with a lot of gadgets included in the package, I need no additional shopping. Who is going to buy the 10 millions iPhones to make Jobs happy? And what about the nice use of Cisco trademark?

Somebody said that the iPhone has got wireless connectivity and not 3G support because wireless will overcome 3G in the near future. Interesting idea, but how near is that future? Enough to justify a non-3G phone today?

Jobs is the biggest control freak in the industry. It’s as simple as that.

Speaking of simple, my phone does two things: Calls and Text Messages. No computer, no internet access, no silly camera, video, mp3 player, gps, and it doesn’t do my dishes. What it does do is have an extremely long battery life and is the most reliable tank of a phone I’ve ever had. It actually took a good deal of research to find that, haha.

Do you really use all that other stuff? I like having good dedicated devices for all those tasks. Perhaps I’m just old-fashioned. ;)

    Cheers!

Ja, I’m happy to need a single device to do all those things. I purchased the A701 to test GPS use and I loved it. Then I started using the phone (I didn’t think I would have used that device as a phone). Then I started using the calendar and everything else. It was pretty nice to visit Wien with my A701 in one hand :-)

I actually expected the iPhone to be a small phone less-featured phone – in style with the Nano. Since they went all the way and made a PDA-type phone I was looking for the GPS too. That would have been very nice. To come in next versions I suppose. And it would make sense to go Nano-size with a simple phone as well.

I actually wonder whether it is a PDA at all :-)
I understand the size, but features are relevant too.

Lets call it “smartphone-type” then :)

Actually, the press worshippers are calling it the “genius phone”. The Apple hype machine, and the ridiculous culture of sycophants that feed on it, know no bounds. Steve jobs can dump on a plate, paint it white, call it iTurd and the analysts would declare it brilliant as Apple stock soars.

    Mark, could I agree more?
